Tell us about a typical day at work for you…
A typical day can be quite varied and no one day is ever the same! As I’m part of the Development team, I get involved with applications from quite a deep level with a fair amount of interaction with our business users taking place. I have a certain amount of affection for data and therefore never get tired of writing queries supplying the business with the facts and figures needed for reporting and decision making.
Typical tasks can range from simple data corrections, to more complex bug fixes and writing code to help build new functionality. Some of the tasks may only take a few minutes to complete, whereas more complex queries can take days to resolve. When it comes to projects, these can range up to weeks and/or months and when someone shouts “pizza” on a late evening, things seem to progress a little easier.
What gives you most satisfaction in your role at Bravissimo?
That’s easy - providing solutions and watching someone smile when we’ve managed to automate a process or cut a process time in half. Building an application or solution and watching it being utilised in a live environment is always very pleasing and satisfying.
How does your role affect Bravissimo’s customers?
I’m involved and responsible for maintaining some of our internal servers, which hold all of our transactional data (i.e. customer details, orders etc.), without these servers being online 24/7 our customers couldn’t place any orders. Maintaining our servers 24/7 can be quite involved and some of the members in IT (including myself) are part of the out-of-hours crew who are available during evenings and weekends to ensure our customers are not let down by any unexpected issues.
What do you most enjoy most about working at Bravissimo?
The people and the environment make working for Bravissimo most enjoyable. The open office plan works really well across the company and is one of my favourite aspects of the role. It might sound like a cliché, but every single member of the business is really welcoming and helpful. The people make the environment and as such the atmosphere is very relaxed.
My team are fun, loud and hardworking and each individual contributes immensely towards the tasks set out by the business. Our team are quite a witty bunch so we have a laugh as we work. As a team, we will do whatever it takes to get a project over the line to the best of our ability.
What makes working at Bravissimo unique?
As a guy, working with so many women! Working in IT, you don’t feel left out as the majority of the team are men, although we do have our fair share of women working in the department. The majority of the applications used by the business and our customers are developed, tested, deployed and maintained by the IT department. Very rarely do we buy off-the-shelf applications – our business model is quite unique, therefore, having the power to make changes as and when our users want, is quite special.
